Do you need an oversand permit just to visit Race Point?
No. An ORV permit is for driving on designated sand routes. Parking at Race Point and walking onto the beach is a normal National Seashore beach visit. A Truro town beach sticker is not the National Seashore entrance pass.
The NPS fee page, checked September 23, 2026, lists $25 for a private vehicle and a $60 Cape Cod National Seashore annual entrance pass, with eligibility and other accepted passes explained there. Fees are seasonal, payment is cashless, and beach passes are sold at beach entrances rather than visitor centers. Check an existing America the Beautiful pass before purchasing another entrance pass.

What does the Race Point ORV permit involve?
An ORV permit authorizes a qualifying vehicle on the designated open corridor, subject to NPS rules, not unrestricted beach driving. For 2026, NPS lists $50 for seven days or $150 annually for an ordinary ORV permit; self-contained-vehicle permits have separate fees.
Seven-day permits require an in-person application at Race Point's Oversand Station. New applicants need the vehicle inspected, required equipment and documents, and the orientation. The NPS permit page links tire and equipment requirements; owning an SUV alone does not establish eligibility. Rental vehicles are prohibited.
NPS lists the permit office season as April 10–November 15, with the last daily permit at 4:15 p.m.; confirm before traveling. Some returning annual applicants qualify for mail-in processing.
Does buying a permit guarantee the route will be open?
No. Buying a permit does not guarantee an open route. NPS warns that nesting-bird closures can substantially reduce the corridor, particularly in June and July, and can change without advance notice. Permit sales are final, without refunds for closures. Check the current corridor map linked from NPS ORV information before deciding whether driving is worth the preparation for your dates.
Build a second beach plan that does not depend on vehicle access to the sand. Bring the family's expectations into the decision: an inspected vehicle and equipment preparation are a different outing from carrying chairs down from a parking lot.
Does an ORV permit include a beach fire?
Do not treat the driving permit as blanket fire permission. Ask the Oversand Station about the rules for your specific location; ordinary NPS beach campfires have their own reservation process. Our beach-fire guide explains the town/NPS distinction and where to start.
For an ordinary Race Point beach evening, arrange parking, the walk back and any fire reservation separately. Permission for one activity does not settle the others.
