Check the property first
Get approval for your specific dog before booking. Start with cottages that consider pets, then ask the host directly. Ask about number and size of dogs, fees, unattended-pet rules, and whether outdoor space is enclosed. “Pets considered” is not approval for your particular booking.
Then check the beach
Dogs cannot join you for the main daytime beach visit during Truro’s summer restriction: town beach regulations prohibit animals from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day. Early and late visits remain subject to wildlife closures and posted rules; a pet-friendly cottage does not change beach access.
For a June trip, check the start date with the Beach Office. As checked September 22, 2026, the town’s general regulations and the introduction to its pet page say the third Saturday in June, but the detailed rule farther down the pet page says the second Saturday. Call 508-487-6983 rather than assuming the later date applies.
Check the beach-by-beach pet restrictions and shorebird notices for the particular entrance you plan to use.
National Seashore beach sections have separate rules. Check NPS conditions and entrance signs for the stretch you plan to use; permission at a town entrance does not establish permission along the entire shoreline.
Make a realistic daily plan
Plan the hours your dog cannot accompany you before paying for the cottage. If the host does not allow dogs to be left alone, your group needs a workable alternative for meals, shows, and daytime beach visits, not just an evening dog walk.
Ask the host:
- May the dog stay alone, and are there crate or time-limit requirements?
- Is the yard actually fenced, or is outdoor space shared with other cottages?
- Where can the dog be rinsed, and which towels should you bring?
- What is the full pet charge, and is any pet deposit refundable?
Bring a leash and waste bags, and follow posted restrictions even outside peak season. Start with cottages that consider pets, then obtain written approval for your dog and dates.
