How long is the ride?
The NPS Head of the Meadow bicycle trail is two miles each way, or four miles out and back, between High Head Road and Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro. It is a separate trail, not an extension of the Cape Cod Rail Trail in South Wellfleet.
Decide the return plan before setting off. Riding to the beach does not remove the need to get the bikes and riders back to your car.
Which end should you start from?
Choose the start point around whether you want a bike ride only or a ride plus beach time.
- High Head Road: NPS identifies a dirt parking area with a two-hour limit. Account for getting ready, rests, and the return ride within that limit.
- Head of the Meadow Beach: seasonal parking fees may apply; seasonal restrooms are at this end. Check the beach parking arrangements before making this your base.
A beach stop can substantially extend the outing. Do not plan an open-ended beach afternoon from time-limited trailhead parking.
Is it a good ride with children?
It can work as a shorter outing if the distance and surface suit your children’s riding ability. NPS notes bumps and loose pavement; do not interpret a paved trail as a guarantee of a smooth surface.
Choose a turnaround point that leaves enough energy for the return. Bring helmets, water, and an easy snack, and check the NPS conditions page before leaving. NPS also advises insect repellent because mosquitoes and deer flies can be present.
If the bikes or conditions are not a good fit that day, a playground or library stop is a simpler alternative.
What should you arrange at the cottage?
Confirm bike storage and transport before packing. A cottage advertised as “near the trail” does not establish that the road route from its driveway is suitable for your group.
Ask the host where bikes may be kept, whether there is space for your vehicle and rack, and whether any advertised bikes are actually included for your dates. If borrowing bikes, confirm sizes and helmets rather than relying on a photograph.
Pack for the ride separately from a full beach day so you are not carrying chairs and a large cooler on an outing that does not need them.
