Request an itemized quote
Ask for an itemized total for the same dates and number of guests, separating:
- Rent: the charge for your stay.
- Fees: cleaning, platform or payment charges, and optional extras.
- Taxes: the applicable rate and which charges are taxable.
- Refundable deposits: money due upfront and the conditions for its return.
A refundable deposit is a cash requirement, not automatically a final expense. Use the booking checklist to confirm payment and cancellation terms too.
Truro’s published rental tax rate
Truro’s rental information page, checked September 22, 2026, lists a 14.45% combined short-term rental tax: 5.7% state, 6% local, and 2.75% Cape Cod and Islands Water Protection Fund tax. It also describes an additional 3% community impact fee for qualifying professionally managed units. Do not assume that every cottage owes that extra fee simply because an agent handles its booking.
For illustration, if the taxable amount is $2,000, 14.45% adds $289, making $2,289 before other charges. If the additional 3% applies to that same amount, it adds another $60. This is arithmetic, not a quote: ask the host which charges form the taxable amount and which rate applies to your booking.
These published figures are not a guarantee of 2027 rates; obtain an itemized quote for your dates.
Direct booking is not a tax exemption
Linking directly to an owner may change booking fees, but it does not by itself remove tax obligations. Get a written rental agreement and verify the recipient before sending payment.
For a month or longer, ask again
Do not assume that “four weeks” and a calendar-month tenancy have identical rules. Have the host confirm the exact dates, tax treatment, cancellation terms, utilities, and any separate tenancy requirements.
