Start with dates, not a displayed price
Confirm your dates and the complete price first. Ask the host for the exact arrival and departure dates, minimum stay, and total for your group. A weekly advertised rate is a starting point for an inquiry, not confirmation that the week is available or that a shorter stay is offered.
If your dates are flexible, give two realistic alternatives. If they are fixed, say so immediately. For a trip next year, ask when that year's calendar and prices will be released. If dates are not open yet, ask whether the host keeps an inquiry list and how to follow up; do not assume an inquiry reserves the cottage.
For a trip soon, ask about the actual opening, check-in arrangements, and any amenities that will be closed for the season. A last-minute stay is not automatically discounted. Our directory links out to the listing where the host or platform handles availability.
Confirm the details that could change your decision
Get written confirmation of the exact unit, your proposed sleeping arrangement, the guest limit, and your two or three must-haves. Include children and any pet in the inquiry. For access needs, ask about the actual entrance and bathroom rather than relying on a general label.
Still weighing beds, cooling, privacy, or beach access? Use the cottage selection guide first; this checklist is for settling the offer before paying.
Confirm what is included in the price
Ask whether sheets, bath towels, beach towels, parking, and any advertised equipment are included or separately charged. Get pet approval and charges in writing where relevant.
After booking, the arrival supply list covers coffee makers, grill fuel, cleaning supplies, and beach equipment. Keep that packing conversation separate from the full rental quote.
Compare the complete quote and written terms
Request an itemized total and the payment schedule. Keep refundable amounts separate from the cost of the stay so you understand both the total expense and how much cash is due before arrival.
- Rent: the price for your actual dates.
- Required charges: cleaning, taxes and platform fees, and any applicable pet fee.
- Optional extras: linen rental, equipment or other services you choose to add.
- Deposit: any refundable security amount and the conditions for its return.
- Payments: amount due now, later due dates, and accepted methods.
- Cancellation: deadlines and what happens if your plans change.
- Arrival and departure: check-in and check-out times and departure tasks.
Use the rental taxes and fees guide to understand the charge categories before comparing quotes. Confirm the terms on the actual offer; there is no single cancellation policy for all Truro cottages.
A message you can adapt for a host
Hello, we're interested in [cottage name] for [arrival date] to [departure date]. Our group is [adults and children], with [pets, if any]. Are those dates available, and what is the full total including required fees and taxes?
Could you confirm [bed arrangement] and [your two most important needs]? Are sheets, bath towels, and beach towels included? Please also send the payment schedule, cancellation terms, check-in details, and any beach-sticker paperwork we should arrange before arrival. Thank you.
Send this through the host's established listing or contact route. You do not need to send identity documents, payment details, or sensitive information to this guide.
Check who you are paying
Verify the rental contact before sending money. The FTC warns that vacation-rental scams can copy real listings and substitute contact information. A request insisting on payment by wire transfer, gift card, payment app, or cryptocurrency is a warning sign.
Use the established host or platform channel, examine the full website address, and pause if instructions suddenly change. See the FTC's travel-scam guidance for the checks behind this advice. A directory entry or photograph is not a guarantee that an offer is legitimate.
